Who are we?
Background: John has been Director of the Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle Trust for more than twenty years. He put Kingswear Castle back into service in 1985 and has had overall responsibility for her operation since then. He also sails as Kingswear Castle's regular master. Born in Weymouth, John grew up watching and sailing aboard the then fast declining numbers of south coast paddle steamers. He got his first paid job at sea at the age of fifteen in his school holidays as a deck boy aboard the cross channel steam ferries Caesarea and Sarnia and the cargo ship Moose, and, at the age of twenty one, whilst an undergraduate at King's College London, became relief skipper of the local passenger vessels Weymouth Belle and New Britannic. After a spell teaching physics and chemistry at Emanuel School in South London John returned to his first love of ships in the early 1980s.
